Benjamin Leroux
Burgundy, France
Benjamin Leroux’s career has been nothing short of impressive. He took the reins at Domaine du Comte Armand at the young age of 24, and stayed at the estate for the fifteen years that followed. In 2007, while still at Comte Armand, Benjamin founded his eponymous project, which operates both as a négociant and estate. He currently farms approximately 30 hectares of vines across Burgundy, of which eight are estate owned. All farming is done organically and biodynamically.
A Beaune native, Benjamin grew up surrounded by the vines of Burgundy, though did not come from a family of winemakers. He began his oenology studies in Beaune at the age of 15, completed them in Dijon, and spent time working abroad to deepen his experience, most notably at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Cos d’Estournel in Bordeaux, and in New Zealand. Benjamin ultimately purchased his first vineyard in 2009, and maintains the mentality that being open-minded to farming techniques (high hedging, using cover crops, etc.) is best.
In the cellar, whole cluster bunches are used for white wines, and generally up to 30% are included for reds. Fermentations take place with native yeasts, and all wines are aged for 12 to 22 months in a variety of steel tanks, barrels, and foudres. New oak rarely exceeds 30%. All reds are unfined and rarely filtered. The resulting wines are seamlessly balanced, lively, and boast an authentic energy reflective of the hands behind the bottles.
